Angelina's
Wedding |
The
Gibson Girl, the Flapper, and Rosie the Riveter — from the puffy
leg-o-mutton sleeve to the thigh-high hem to overalls and a
handkerchief-wrapped hairdo. While the styles of these icons of
the past eras may have differed wildly, one event most women of
these times had in common was the wedding. And each woman came
to it with the style sense and customs of her own era. |
| |
When
Angelina Wilson married James Stout at Wilson Place in 1889, she
exemplified both customs from the past and changes which were
underway.
It is the shifts in style and customs between 1889 and 1949 that
are celebrated in the Wilson Place wedding gown exhibition
"Remembering Angelina’s Wedding". Gowns from the 60-year period
will be on display, with place of honor going to Angelina’s
ivory version. |
| |
Guests will learn of the "flirt and flaunt" wedding lore, view
the gowns in the elegant Wilson Place setting, hear snippets of
the year-long honeymoon, and all will enjoy a refreshments and
wedding cake in the fountain garden. Each "guest" will also
receive a "wedding memento" in the form of an elegant brochure
detailing the gowns and Angelina’s wedding, an invitation, and a
memento ticket. |

Victorian Christmas |
From
mid-November through January, you can revel in spectacular
sights, scents and tastes of a Victorian Christmas at Wilson
Place. Evergreen garlands swoop across the fences and swirl
about the mansion; tree lights glitter from the French windows;
and white doves perch gaily on the grand mahogany staircase,
glowing in the velvety red masses of poinsettias. Wilson Place
is like a Christmas jewel. Hundreds of antique ornaments
decorate trees throughout the parlor, while elsewhere, theme
trees glitter with crystal and silver decorations; and other
shimmer with Queen Anne’s lace, and Irish Beleck. Hints of
mulled cider and Christmas baking (samplings at the end of the
tour) fill the air. In a season which honors light, the home
becomes a veritable winter wonderland at Christmas twilight .
